2021.12.07 11:15 samwhu30 Automations stopped working
I am running homebridge on a raspberry pi and I have my HomePod as my hub.
I haven’t changed anything from my set up but all of a sudden most of my automations have stopped working.
My motion sensor that turns a light on has stopped.
When I go out everything doesn’t turn off anymore but when I come back the lights that are meant to turn on come back on.
I have run updates and restarted the homebridge from the control panel menu. I was just wondering if this was common and any fixes to stop it happening frequently?
I think pulling the plug on the pi and giving it a few mins and then plugging it back in would work but ideally don’t want to be doing that every month or so..

2021.12.07 11:15 _lostmoth33 my entire family may be out of a job come january
hi everyone. i've been lurking for a long time and really appreciate what this sub is about. i'm in a very strange situation that requires much explanation so please bare with me. before i start let me preface by saying i understand the mistakes my family made to get us into this situation and i really would appreciate kindness rather than scorn. we all have enough regret as it is.
roughly 4 years ago my mom was asked to take on a manager role at a manufacturing factory located 14 hours from home on a 2 year contract. her (our) boss has his hands in many projects and was failing at them all, so he needed one of his few employees that he could trust to go get the factory back in good shape because it was losing money rather than making any profit for the entire 10 years that he had bought and owned the company. at the time, my dad had shifted from being an independent contractor to working under the same boss's payroll to remodel several of his rental properties. the pay was more stable and included health insurance coverage and with my dad being in his 40s and dealing with health issues it was a better fit for him. I was also going through mental health struggles and had lost my job after going into a hospital for 10 days so when I got out they let me begin working with my dad on the houses while I lived at home and figured myself out. it was great money and I liked working with my dad and not having a set schedule.
my parents were promised a drastic pay increase for moving to the new job. they asked me if I wanted to go with them and I said yes. I wanted out of my state and to start fresh. I thought we would work there for 2 years, my parents would move back, and then I would have a decent savings to move on from there. I began as a production employee making the same amount as everyone else makes at the beginning ($12/hr). this was a very small factory of around 10 people.
when we got there, we quickly realized within the first year or so WHY the plant was failing. machinery was all from the 50s and hardly had regular maintenance done to them, except when they were not functioning. long story short, my mom had to beg for money to be sent to have the machines repaired and even the men who repaired them said everything on them was obsolete and they would need to be rebuilt for maximum production. the boss would ignore her calls and basically avoid confronting the reality of his plant was in the beginning stages of going under. he was caught in a decision between spending potentially millions on fixing presses, kilns, sulfur tanks etc or finding some other eay to run the company elsewhere. he has put off that decision until .... now.
when the pandemic hit most of the crew either quit immediately when they didn't want to wear a mask around the rest of us or they quit gradually as time went on. the more people quit, the more me and my family had to take on. we were just appreciative to have a job where we didn't have to be around customers and we got to work together. we didn't like the work and had already been there past our contract though, but boss asked us to stay through the pandemic. he received grant money and proceeded to cut all of our pay and insurance coverage. this led to the maintenance man retiring early. this really sealed the company's fate.
our plant is now down to my family and two other employees. we despise our boss for not doing what he needed to do to keep the place functioning and how he expects us to continue living 14 hours from our other friends and family making LESS than we all were back home. we had dreams of buying a small acreage farm together and all helping to pay it off so that none of us individually have to work in shitty conditions like this ever again, hopefully. my parents just signed on a property yesterday. it is closer to where we originally are from so we can be with family etc. we told him we planned to do this and we all gave him a 6 MONTH NOTICE, per his request. that puts us to leaving at the first of January.
i know i probably sound spoiled for having been given a job working under my parents, and I am not ungrateful for it. but it is a place full of toxic chemicals and dust everywhere. we all are majorly depressed being there.
my dad is diabetic and is currently undergoing eye treatments because he is quite literally going blind. he thinks he will be able to pick back up on construction but I know that isn't realistic. none of us knows what the future looks like after Christmas. all we know is we now have land to try to farm and gain a little self-sufficiency to save money rather than make so much and the payments are low on it.
I guess this is just a long rant of what has me feeling like I've made the worst decisions in my life to get to this point and not be in a better situation to help out my family. I'm 28 and want to finish earning my degree. I want to sell my art. I want to do so many things that have been put on hold while working in the factory.
I don't know if I'm looking for advice or support. maybe both. I don't know how to fit my priorities in with all of this. I don't know anything about what kind of insurance may be available for my dad so that he doesn't go blind. I could be content living in a barn and working 2 days a week and farming for my food .. but I feel responsible for making sure my parents are able to afford medicine.
I want to cry knowing that if we lived elsewhere in the world that we could be free to live how we want to and not worrying about dying from lack of Healthcare. we worked our asses off to get land, and I want to enjoy the fruits of our labor. but I can't. I'm glad we won't be taken advantage of anymore though.
sorry for the novel of rambling. my head is a jumbled mess of thoughts. in a turn of events, our boss says he will buy all new equipment and pick up the factory work in the state that we moving to, if we of course give him 6 or 8 MORE months here to accomplish that. we know he is full of shit and just buying time. I've thought about saying I will do it for a dramatic pay increase not only for me but the other two employees there .. but to be honest I don't know if we could afford to make payroll with how badly things are going.
TLDR; my family was swindled into moving 14 hours away to run a factory together on 2 year contact. boss cut insurance and pay during pandemic, factory is failing, and we are 2 years over contract time already. fuck the United States Healthcare system.
